Out of the Way on the South Island

This is a fairly remote part of the South Island, named for explorer and geologist Julius von Haast. It's a good ways from almost anywhere, but some of the scenery is great. Rustic and isolated, this is a change of pace from the towns.

At an elevation of 1.867 feet (563 meters), State Highway 6 (SH 6) here was the last major road to be built through the rugged Southern Alps. It was completed in 1965. Be sure to stop and enjoy some of the scenery along the route.
