This city is best known as the home of the Papacy during the 14th century. The obstensible purpose of re-locating the Pope here was to protect him, since Italy was a collection of city-states that were constantly fighting each other. But the true purpose was to forge even tighter links between the Catholic Church and the French monarchy.
Avignon is also famed for its bridge, subject of the old song about dancing on it (actually, people would dance beneath it).
