County Durham: The Jewel of Northumbria

County Durham is often overlooked by travellers enroute to Scotland. That's a mistake. It's well worth stopping for a day or two in this beautiful country. Durham is one of Britain's treasures. It also lies directly on the Great Northeastern Railway (GNER) line between London and Edinburgh.

The city was built overlooking a sharp bend in the River Wear (pronounced the same as "we're"). Back in the Dark Ages, this was a natural defensive strong point, surrounded on three sides by water. Not only does the river form a natural moat, but the hill itself is a formidable obstacle. On top is Durham Cathedral, which is protected by high walls. Before the unification of England and Scotland, this city was the linchpin on England's northern defenses against Scottish invaders.
