How embarrassing. It's been over 10 years since I last stepped foot in London (or all of Europe, for that matter), and I've been seriously meaning to get back. I mean, my own sister was living in the UK and made monthly visits to London, so certainly I can take the 9 hour direct flight for a week or two, right? It's only been over a decade... what's my weak excuse? Well, the good news is that I definitely have intentions of returning to London one day, but in the meantime, I can only share my first impressions of this lovely city.
When I was 15 years old in high school, I signed up for this "Fine Arts Trip" to England and Scotland. I mean, how could one not sign up and take advantage of such an opportunity? We would visit during the last week of March and the first week in April, and as long as we had good grades and were interested in museums, art galleries, theatre, musicals, history, and architecture, we were on the list to go. I think there was a maximum allowance of 30 students, but in the end, only 18 students signed up. Eighteen! Sheesh! |

| | Despite the low turn-out, on March 27, 1996, our small group of 18 grade ten and eleven high school students in addition to our 2 lovely teachers (Mr. Hobson, our music teacher and Ms. McCarthey, our drama teacher) from Hugh McRoberts Secondary School in Richmond, BC, Canada flew out of the Vancouver International Airport and landed at Heathrow Airport 9 hours later.
I was just one of those students in that group. For most, if not all of us, this was our first trip to the UK and had therefore we had no idea what to expect. But we were young, we loved our British music, and were just mature enough to be able to explore on our own. Most of us were already friends with one another, so it was like throwing a party the entire time, except here we were in London! What we saw of London, we loved, and it's no secret that we all had a blast. This page therefore represents my few days in London at the beginning of that trip. |
