A fourteen-year-old's perspective of Paris

by Carmanah - last update: Oct 13, 2006

Our last day in Paris at the Hard Rock Café
Oh, les Champs-Elysées!

I visited Paris in October 1994 - over twelve years ago! I admit that as of right now, I don't really know Paris well enough to give out proper recommendations or itineraries. Yet, I was still there in Paris, and I feel that my experiences are worthy of sharing. As a result, this page is more or less a nostalia-filled memoire of my few days spent there.

Additionally, because I was 14 years old at the time, there's going to be a lot of teenage bias in what I recollected in comments and what I captured in photos. For example, a lunch at the Hard Rock Café, or a visit to a U2 music video location was more important to me at the time than mingling with the locals or appreciating the architectural history!

Why Paris?

I was in Paris as a part of a 10 day French Immersion excursion with my high school. We were there to experience French culture, learn about French (and Canadian) history, in addition to being able to practice our French... if only the shopkeepers didn't answer us in English first!
My U2 pilgrimmage to Sacré-Coeur

We left Vancouver on October 9th, 1994, spending the first night and last 3 days in Paris. Unfortunately because we were all 14 and 15 year olds at the time, we were under strict supervision and the only destinations we could go to had already been preplanned by the teachers. Even our meals were planned out! Nevertheless, with our short amount of time in this wonderful city, I did observe a thing or two.. and I do have fond memories of strolling around the cobble stone boulevards, excited to be there, finally, in France, in Europe, travelling without my parents, responsible for myself abroad for the first time in my life.

Pros:"Very famous monuments, some of the world's best art galleries, a highly sophisticated cultural hub, relatively easy to get around on public transit"
Cons:"The French clichés of sidewalk cafés and romance have made Paris into a highly touristy city, the street vendors are really aggressive, it's not the cheapest place in the world to visit!"

Excellent page...I had no idea that U2 shot a video at Sacred Couer...I'm a huge U2 fan and have always loved visiting the white castle on the hill...I guess it all matches up. I will see Sacred Couer in a different light next time!

Goog-yarg-grroooo!! Moog-yaya...bleep? Good idea to get rid of the vendors. Even though you were only fourteen at the time, it sounds like you had a fine trip to Paris and even got a lot out of it. And I like your thoughtful recent updates.

Nice to read your experiences - Paris is an amazing city! You just have to love this city from the very first moment, no matter how often you get there, it is always as much fun as on your first visit!
