Furry Friends !

Taronga Zoo

I love Taronga Zoo and considering the amount of time I've spent in Sydney I can't believe this is the first year I've been! I'll certainly go again, can't wait in fact! It's impossible to do everything justice in one day but boy can you try!

On April 24th, 1912 the NSW Government granted 43 acres of land north of the harbour which were part of Ashton Park. Another 9 acres were granted in April 1916.

In 1913, Management of the zoo passed to a Trust named the New Zoological Gardens Trust which became the Taronga Zoological Park Trust. It was Officially opened in October 1916.

Travelling

I'm back from my Malaysia and Australia experience and wiser for the trip !!! Yeh right ! Jet Lag hasn't been a problem this year, I was quite fortunate to have arrived back home at 9pm at night and therefore on the right time to go to bed! I managed to cram in quite a bit during my 4 week trip and will slwoly but surely add them to the pages as soon as I can including trips to Taronga Zoo, the Opera House, Bridge and manly to name but a few.

Coming Soon - plenty of pics and tips of my 14th trip downunder - I should really move there I think, it'll work out a lot cheaper!

I love travelling, it's in my blood! I'm not sure why I enjoy it so much but I think the main reason is to meet new people, make friends and to see different cultures around the world. I mainly go to Australia these days as I used to live in Melbourne but due to family reasons I haven't been back for a couple of years.

However I am going back in January and can't wait to watch the cricket at the SCG! I've been a member here for a few years but never had the time to change anything so here I am, starting at the begining, hoping that someone will like what I write enough to say hi!

That's it for now, as soon as i have my travel pics scanned I'll upload them and share my thoughts on numerous places around the world. Until then, take care - happy days.

"Invictus" by William Earnest Henley

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.
Best Harbour in the world
William Ernest Henley 1849 - 1903 wrote this amazing poem whilst hospitalised for 18 months in his early life through tubercolosis of the bone which led to him losing one of his legs from the knee down and his other being saved only by his own refusal to have it removed and the brilliant treatment of the great Joseph Lister the pioneer of anastesia.....Henley was an outspoken articulate plainspeaking athiest..and this poem asserts the indomitability of the human spirirt "no Gods need to apply, the power of the human spirit is enough" is basicaly what he is expressing..175 years later this poem was used by Timothy Mcveigh the Oklahoma bomber in the united states as a final statement to be read after his execution for bombing an FBI building in the city of Oklahoma...Mcveigh too claimed to be an athiest.....Henley was an editor and publisher and a lifelong friend of Robert Louis Stevenson ..Stevenson actualy based his "Long John Silver" pirate character from "Treasure Island" upon his friend Henly who he described affectionately as "Pirately"

I've just found this information out and thought it interesting to add a little side note to the poem.
