Komarno is a city situated in the south of Slovakia on the Slovak-Hungarian border. It has the population of about 40000 people, about 78 percent of whom speak Hungarian as their native language.

Established in the middle ages, the district of Komarno belongs among the oldest on Slovakia. The developement of ancient settlement, now present day Komarno, was fostered by its advantageous location which also provided a strategic position for a castle and the future fortification system.
The town of Komarno, situated at the confluence of the Danube and Vagh rivers, was officialy established in 1265 by king Bela IV, who gave the town city rights. Later on, in the 18th century, the developement of the city was hindered by the impact of frequent descructive earthquakes as well as fires and floods.

Nowadays, Komarno has become an aim for both, slovak and foreign tourists, thanks to its good position on the border but also thanks to couple of its interests.
One of its special interests are the thermal springs whose waters have medical qualities.
Except that, Komarno is famous for its fortification system, one of the biggest in Europe. It used to protect city against Turks years ago.
Also, there are many historical monuments here, such as old churches, castle and many others.
Then, there is one new sigtseeing, the Europe square. It was built only recently, each building there represents the main architectural attributes of different European country.

According to me, as I have lived in Komarno for 10 years, it is a town wort to be seen.
So i hope that once you get there, you will enjoy it.

Nice pages with info...I used to come here pre EU days to renew my visa as Hungary had 6 months max for us UK citizens. A beautiful town and not too touristy. Tim
