Imperial Palace: The Imperial Palace is located...
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Imperial Palace is located in the center of modern Tokyo, where Tokugawa Ieyasu built his castle at the end of the 16th century. The castle remained the political and military center until the end of the Tokugawa reign in 1867. After the capital moved from Kyoto to Tokyo, the new imperial palace was built at the same location as the Tokugawa castle. The palace had to be rebuilt after being completely destroyed during World War II. The castle is not open to the public, with the exception of the East garden.

Asakusa: The Senso Temple (also called...
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Senso Temple (also called Asakusa Temple) is located in one of the hearts of Tokyo city, in Asakusa near Ueno station. In the year 628, two fishermen fished a statue of Kannon out of the Sumida river. Because, even though they threw the statue back into the river twice, it always returned to the two fishermen, the Senso temple was built there for Kannon. In the year 1649, the Asakusa Shrine was built just beside the Senso temple.

Nikko - Day Trip: The Toshogu Shrine in Nikko...
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Toshogu Shrine in Nikko was built for Tokugawa Ieyasu after his death. It contains the mausoleum of Ieyasu who is one of the most important figures in Japanese history, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate that lasted for over 250 years until 1867. The Toshogu Shrine is very famous for its colorful and sumptuously decorated buildings rather untypical for Shinto shrines.
