Dubai, in the northeastern United Arab Emirates, is the capital of the state of Dubai and is located on the western side of Dubai Creek. Known as the Venice of the Gulf, Dubai is the chief port and commercial centre of the country. A city of some 700 000 inhabitants, it is the second largest of the seven emirates, which make up the United Arab Emirates. Abu Dhabi, which is the capital city, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah are the other six emirates in the federation.
I visited Dubai in August, during a stop-over from Islamabad to Munich. Don’t come to Dubai during the summer: the city has temperatures above 50 C.
