My first visit to Thailand was in May 1986. After a visit to Bangkok and a few days of trekking near Chiang Mai in the northwestern part of Thailand, I went south to the island of Phuket. From there I wanted to transfer to the island of Koh Phi Phi, which proved impossible because of bad weather. I left Phuket after only two days and returned to Bangkok. Lesson learned: Don’t go there between May and September.
I came back in December 1994. By that time Phuket wasn’t the same anymore. It had developed into one of the most popular tourist resorts in South East Asia. On both islands, Phuket and Koh Phi Phi, I stayed only for one night; then carried on my journey to Krabi. After that, I went to the island of Koh Lanta.
