<center>I lived in Japan for almost 12 months during the years 1986-88. During my first trip to Japan, in the spring of 1986, I visited Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara and the island of Kyushu. My second visit during the summer of 1987, included a visit to Saitama University near Tokyo; that summer I also worked in an onsen ryokan (hot spring inn) on the island of Hokkaido. My third trip to Japan was as a visiting scholar to Keio University in Tokyo.
