The beautifully preserved ruins of Ostia lie between the Tiber River and the Tyrrhenian Sea, about 30 km from Rome. Ostia was founded in the 4th century BC, as a military colony to guard the river mouth against seaborne invasions. Later, during the centuries when virtually all imports reached the Capital via the Tiber, Ostia gained prominence as the landing for cargo boats. By the 2nd century AD, it had become a flourishing commercial center inhabited by upwards of 100 000 people. Ostia's amphitheater (picture) was erected in 12 BC for up to 3500 spectators.

Most Ostian apartment buildings were like ancient condos, with all the tenants sharing facilities and expenses. One important facility shared by all was the communal forica, or latrine. The picture shows a large airy room, where a marble bench with twenty holes runs the length of all four walls. Unbelievable how much time the ancient Romans spent in public :-) See my Ostia Antica travelogue for more information.

The presence of malarial mosquitoes in the coastal marshes that once stretched the length of Lazio prevented settlement on any scale. The marshes have been drained and this coastline can now be enjoyed without risk. One of the most popular resorts among the locals is Sperlonga. The town is reminiscent of a Greek island village. Sperlonga, with its white sand beaches, staircase-style streets and its vicinity to Rome, make it the ideal Italian seaside village. On the far end of the beach, is a grotto beside the remains of the Villa of Tiberius, the Roman Emperor who spent the summers here. Sperlonga is easily reached from Rome and Naples within two hours by car or train (nearest station in Fondi).

About 20 km south of Rome, is Frascati, famous for its light and dry white wine. Many of the town's restaurants specialize in the local wine and it is widely available in all local shops. The town itself is also very pleasant. The picture shows Villa Aldobrandini as seen from Piazzale Marconi.
