Piazza San Marco received its present shape in the 12th century, for the meeting of Pope Alexander III and the Emperor Barbarossa by filling in Rio Batario and the dock. The alteration of the Square was done over the course of one century, adapting to the growing power and wealth of Venice.

The Rialto Bridge is the true heart of Venice. The current structure was built between 1588 and 1591. It remained the only way to cross the Grand Canal on foot until the Accademia Bridge was built in 1854. The massive structure was built on some 12 000 wooden pilings that still support the bridge more than 400 years later. The architect, Antonio da Ponte competed against such eminent designers as Michelangelo and Palladio for the contract. The bridge has three walkways: two along the outer balustrades, and a wider central walkway leading between two rows of small shops that sell jewelry, linens, Murano glass, and other items for the tourist trade.

The Venetian Lagoon is a crescent-shaped body of water between the Italian mainland and the Adriatic sea. It lies within the arms of the Litorale Pellestrina, Litorale di Lido, and Litorale del Cavallino. These three strips of land are broken at only three entrances or porti along a length of some 30 miles (45 km), creating a marshy environment that is fed by rivers yet flushed by salt water from the Adriatic.

In 1516 an enclosed neighborhood for Jews was created, called the Jewish Ghetto. The word „ghetto“ did not have the negative connotation it has today. At the time it was quite common for foreign merchants to be housed in a separate quarter, e.g. the German and Turkish merchants lived in separate quarters.

In its glory days of the 1700s, Carnival began on Dec 26 and lasted until Ash Wednesday, with mask-wearing and other unofficial activities continuing well into the spring. The nonstop partying, gambling, and general irresponsibility reflected the decline of the Venetian Republic, which had begun to lose wealth and power with the rise of Dutch and British trade in the 1600s. During the period of Carnival it seems that every excess was permitted. The streets were thronged with people intent on partying and carousing, singing, dancing and playing games.

Palazzo Grassi was renovated in 1985, just prior to my first visit to Venice. The facade now once again displays the colours of that white stone that was shipped to Venice from Istria centuries ago...
