My first visit to Nice was as a teenager in 1974 during a three-week vacation on the Cote d'Azur. My longest stay in Nice was in summer 1983 while I was working for a French company. The city with its mild Mediterranean climate, its beautiful harbor and old town center make it the perfect place to live. Nice is an ideal starting point for trips to the Alps, to Italy or to other medieval towns in the Provence: Aix, Avignon, Les Baux, Saint Tropez...
„Nikaia“, as Nice was originally called, was established by the Greeks during the 5th century BC on the Chateau Hill. About 3 km north of Le Chateau is the hill of Cimiez, were the Romans have started the tourism with their extensive baths. Louis XIV destroyed the castle in 1706. The Belle Epoque was the period from 1880 to 1914 when Queen Victoria visited regularly, staying at what is now the Victoria Hotel at Cimiez. In 1887, the poet Stéphen Liégeard baptized the region the "Cote d'Azur". |
