"Tabatinga" Manaus by AndreasK
Manaus Travel Guide: 290 reviews and 814 photos
<center>Tabatinga is Brazil's westernmost town on the Amazon River. It is bordering with Leticia, Colombia. There is no formal border between the two countries and the transition from one town to the other is virtually unnoticeable, except the language of shop signs changes from Portuguese to Spanish. Tabatinga is about five days by boat from Manaus.
When you’re making plans, bear in mind that the three countries (i.e. Brazil, Colombia, Peru) have differing time zones: make sure you know which you are operating on (Tabatinga is an hour behind Manaus).
For many centuries this region has been home to the Tikuna Indians, once large in numbers, but today down to a population of around 10 000. Their excellent handicrafts – mainly string bags and hammocks – can be bought in Leticia.
