"Islamabad & Rawalpindi" Islamabad by AndreasK
Islamabad Travel Guide: 418 reviews and 878 photos
Islamabad is the Capital of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The city was built between 1960 - 1970 to replace the Capital from Karachi. Before that, Islamabad was just a small village. Today, Islamabad is a city of modern architecture.
Rawalpindi, twin city to Islamabad, is the main city with a population of around two million. Rawalpindi is a bustling city with a lot of activity. Rawalpindi, which derives its name from an Urdu word meaning “Village of the Rawals,” was inhabited by a community of Hindu ascetics before the town was settled by Sikhs in 1765. The region came under British control in 1849, and Rawalpindi subsequently became the center of operations for the British Northern Army. It was here that the British signed the 1919 treaty confirming the independence of neighboring Afghanistan.
Rawalpindi served as provisional capital of Pakistan from 1959 to 1967, when the seat of government was transferred to the newly built city of Islamabad, located just 14 km to the northeast.
We started our 4-week trip through Pakistan in Rawalpindi. Besides Rawalpindi's bazar and Islamabad's mosque there is not much to see in these two cities. Please check my Pakistan, Peshawar and Lahore pages for information about my trip through this magnificent country.
The picture above shows the Faisal Mosque, built with Saudi Arabian petrodollars. Both countries, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, are moslem countries where the sunni moslems prevail. The shia and ismaili moslems are in the minority. Very often, the shia-sunni conflict leads to riots.
