Known to its inhabitants as 'The Silver City', Aberdeen stands guarding the North Sea with prosperity and contradictions. Through oil finds in 1960s, Aberdeen now claims the title to Europe's Oil Capital. Mix 200,000 scots with 100,000 students and oilworkers, you get an explosive nightlife of contradictions that light up the North Sea for miles around.
As there is prosperity around, it's a fairly expensive but vibrant city, there are however two excellent universities, a contemporary art school and a hectic music scene around, you just need to know where to look.
Cafe 52 on the Green is avant guarde with nice ambience. The Atheneum or the Zinc bar for clean, shirts cool beers and eye contact. Per cucina italiana then then park your vespa outside Little Italy or La Scala. Visit 'La Bamba' on Crown Terrace for some long Oaxacan nights. Drinking and social things happen at best around the area called 'Belmont Street'. In the same area there's a fantastic Art film complex showing obsure foreign films. Just stop someone and say hi to any young Aberdonians and they'll happily introduce you to the vibrant underground club scene and a few parties besides.
