Mårup Kirke

Mårup Kirke is an old church with a cementry around it. Due to the permanent wind and the sandy ground, this graveyard disappears more and more. The ground and with it the graves are falling down the cliffs into the North Sea.

Till 1950+something people were still burried there. Some parts of this old, little church were build already in the 12th century. Now it's just a matter of time that the church will be also a victim of this natural erusion.
Beside of Rubjerg Knude (which is very close to Mårup Kirke) this is one of the most impressive spots in norhtern Denmark.

Rubjerg Knude - a lighthouse lost in sand

The lighthouse was build around 1910 close to the north sea.
In the last few decades more and more sand built up around this light house. The people there tried to fight against the sand, but it didn't help. They couldn't keep the lighthouse and put a museum and a cafeteria in the old buildings. But the endless fight against the sand seemed quite useless. In 1999 they finally gave up completely and gave the nature back what it demanded.
It is quite impressive and really worth a visit!

Directions: You can't miss it if you look on a map in the northern part of Denmark above Aalborg along the north sea coast.
