Ma’assalama… In October 2000, I was in Amman, Jordan, for an international conservation meeting - while there, I got to see Petra, the Dead Sea (and stick my toes in), Jerash, and hear some of the unrest in the neighbourhood - Israel and Jerusalem are just across the river.
Overall impressions? I loved the time I spent in Jordan. The country and people are quite lovely. It was an unfortunate time to be there (October 2000) with some unrest in the area. I would love to go back to the region, see some other parts of Jordan (Aqaba, +), experience the Dead Sea, see some parts of Israel (Jerusalem), and also return to Turkey. It could be one trip! It is hard to imaging this area ever being "the Fertile Crescent", however. From what I saw, it appears quite dry and, on the surface, barren. Of course, it is extraordinarily fertile with history and artifacts and reminders of what was there before.
