Mayville Ice Castle and More The Mayville Ice Castle is the most Southern Ice Castle in North America. I was lucky and got to help build this Great Castle this Year. The 1st week the channel was cut and the frame was laid out. Monday Feb .2, 2004 I started on a 12 Day in a row helping build the Castle. This was the largest Castle in the 17 Year History of Mayville Ice Castles. Chautauqua Lake was late in forming any ice this Year. Finally the ice started and cold weather can thicken ice from one inch to 3 inches a day. We needed at least 8 inches to build. We ended up with about 18 inch Blocks weighing about 400 Pounds each. The weekend of Feb.13-15 brought about just over 10,000 visitors to see the castle. We also had a Wedding. I will be working on how to build a Ice Castle in a Travel log ASAP. It is very interesting to do. Lake Chautauqua Use to be a large provider of Ice in the early Years before Freezers. Welcome to Chautauqua County New York. |
