The bars at Leidseplein and Rembrandtsplein can be a bit of a tourist trap (although the terraces are great for people-watching). They're not all bad (Hoopman on Leidseplein and L'Opera on Rembrandts I like), but some really are and if you look a bit further, you will find many nicer bars, especially in the Jordaan area and on Prinsengracht. Also, the bars on these two main squares are generally very expensive.

Amsterdam police is warning not to play a game called 'balletje balletje'. It is played on the streets in (mostly) the red light district and you will never win it. Another tourist trap is buying drugs on the streets. Never do it: it can be dangerous and it's illegal. There are 100-odd legal coffeeshops in AMS to provide you with your softdrugs and smart shops were you can get mushrooms etcetera.
