Komboskini - Meteora

Komboskini

What is it?

Sometimes people buy things without knowing the real meaning of them. One of such things is KOMBOSKINI. They are sold in every monasteryand may remind an armlet of friendship:)
Actually, this thing is rather a “friend” of a monk, because it used to count prayers. The meaning of them is almost the same as of Roman Catholic rosaries: one knot for one prayer. If fact, this thing has a great turnover at the counters of monasteries because of the following reasons:
 Komboskini is a practical thing that helps to pray.
 Komboskini is a handwork of a praying monk and therefore monk's prayers are saved in the knots.
 It is said that komboskini have power to preserve owner from evil force.

Unique Suggestions: Komboskini available in women’s monastery Roussanou are done more thoroughly and look nicer.

Fun Alternatives: It depends on your choice:
 Big quantity and marketable appearance of komboskini available in women’s monastery may mean that nuns are more concerned at business; I learnt that these komboskini are not made in Meteora, but another monastery of GR.
 Rough handwork and small quantity of komboskini made in men’s monasteries may mean either heavy work or great demand, or they do not like praying too much:)
(God, forgive me for worldly thoughts…)

P.S. I still have them (from 2002 till 2005). I put them on my arm when I am going to a battle. They protect me, my little miraculous komboskini...

2010: sorry, I was naive: the quality is too good to be handmade. Factory or China
