Petersburg is every bit as lovely as you'd think. Peter the Great truly earned his name by creating this gem of a city, with scores of beautiful buildings set like jewels amid the canals. It's a mecca for lovers of literature, art, music and dance, but even if culture isn't your bag, you're likely to appreciate St. Petersburg's special atmosphere. Beauty is everywhere in this city that seems to reach openly toward Europe, even while retaining its essential Russian character.
