So Much Has Changed Since 2005

A lot has changed in Akhaltsikhe since Maykal last wrote about it in 2005 here in VT. The Georgian government spent tons of money to have everything within the fortress was renovated and rebuilt. Now it is a gleeming tourist site with pockets of old ruins, lots of towers to climb and buildings to poke into, a brand-new 4-star spa hotel, a new museum and coming soon... lots of shops and cafes.

Some people like the changes, some people mourn the loss of the old ruins. I never saw the old ruins, but from some pictures, I am glad they rebuilt this fortress. I thought it was beautiful and I think it will become a popular tourist destination.

If you look at the pictures connected to Akhaltsikhe, you will see pictures of a "cave-city". These pictures are not of Akhaltsikhe, but of Vardzia, which is one hour away (not four, as described by one writer in 2005). Vardzia is now even more worth visiting as it is an easy trip from Akhaltsikhe.

Lovely little page here. Interesting to read, that there is a restaurant specialised in German food. I have enough of that at home. *winkygrin*
