During the opening scene of the classic movie "The Sound of Music", the scene is moving across a land of green mountains and lakes before slowing zooming in on Maria who is on top of a mountain dancing and then starting to sing "The hills are alive with the sound of music ....."

The above classic scene was shot in the beautiful Salzkammergut region of the Austria, of which Schafberg mountain (1783 metres) is one of the most famous mountains at the Salzkammergut region.

This mountain is conveniently located just next to the famous town of Sankt Wolfgang (see my VT Sankt Wolfgang im Salzkammergut page) and beautiful Wolfgangsee lake. You can take the famous cog train up the mountain to have great views, trekking, relaxing etc. For "Sound of Music" fans, this is perhaps as close as you can get to experiencing the classic open scene of the movie for yourself.

The scenery of the surrounding Salzkammergut region along the way up Schafberg mountain is simply breathtaking, and it is truely the reflection of the classic scenery of Austria and surrounding areas of Europe. You will really be amazed by the awesome landscape.

Here is a photograph of Schafberg mountain taken along the bus journey from Salzburg to the town of Sankt Wolfgang, which is the place for you to take the train up to the top of the mountain.
