Old tomb along the coastal road, Oman - Tiwi

Old tomb along the coastal road, Oman

Old tomb

During the journey along the rugged coastal gravel road to Tiwi, you will come across this structure in the photograph which is actually an old tomb of the local people. Apparently, there used to be many of these tombs around here, but many are demolished to make way for the new talmac road which will replace the gravel road soon. The view of the surrounding areas from the tomb is very good as it is located at a high point.

Entrance to the Muscat-Sur coastal road, Oman - Tiwi

Entrance to the Muscat-Sur coastal road, Oman

Entrance to the coastal road from Muscat to Sur

The entrance to the rugged coastal road from Muscat to Sur where Tiwi, Qalhat etc are located is somewhere after the town of Qurayyat which is south of Muscat. From the main talmac road, this gravel road is rather discrete and the initial part goes along a dry wadi between two hills. After that, the gravel road goes up and down through several hills before reaching the coast. This photo is taken at the entrance part which is the dry wadi in a valley.

Steep valley of Wadi Shab, Oman - Tiwi

Steep valley of Wadi Shab, Oman

Trekking at Wadi Shab

For those seeking an adventure, it is possible to do trekking in Wadi Shab which starts from the town of Tiwi. You will enter the steep valley of the Wadi (see photograph) and at one small part of the journey you need to do some swimming in the wadi. Eventually, you will reach the other side of the mountains which is somewhere near to another famous wadi called Wadi Bani Khalid. You will need a guide and it takes about 2 days for the entire trek.

Beautiful Wadi Shab, Oman - Tiwi

Beautiful Wadi Shab, Oman

Wadi Shab & Wadi Tiwi

There are two very beautiful wadis (rivers) with water all year around next to the town of Tiwi. They are Wadi Tiwi and Wadi Shab and you should visit them as they are simply incredible. Another interesting thing about these 2 wadis is that they are next to the sea and during high tide, the blue sea water actually will mix with the green water of the wadi creating an interesting sight.

Friendly people

The people of Tiwi are very friendly, especially the children who will come and greet you and even offer to help you to take photographs. Even in a rural town such as Tiwi, there is a school where children gets educated and learn English at a very young age. The younger generation of Omanis generally can communicate in English well so language is not a problem here.
