The walls of Istanbul were protecting it for 1000 years from the attacks of the enemies. They are still standing in several places. Staring from Top Kapi the Bosphorus sea, you will notice this particular part of the walls. 'Romanos Gate' was the place that the last emperor of Byzantium, Konstantinos Paleologos, died, still resisting to Fatih Sultan Mehmet the conqueror of Istanbul back in 1453 A.C. There is a statue of Fatih there.
I will never forget an American gentleman looking at the walls and asking the locals 'what's this wall stands for' :-( OK let's study history a bit, when we visit one of the most historical cities of the world, we didn't come just to eat kebab and other local specialities... those walls stand there since 5th century A.C.
