The Moorish Capital of the Algarve

View from the Castle
Again, part of the 'Historic Algarve' tour - Silves was the medieval residence and capital of the Moorish Kings of the Al-Gharb. It fell to Christian forces in 1249 but continued to be a major port and housed the Algarve's bishopric until this moved to Faro in 1577. In the earthquake of 1755 many of the finer buildings were demolished and it dwindled to the market town that it is today.

Amazingly, we managed to fit quite a lot into the 45 mins we had in this place (amazing what willpower can do!) I would have loved to stay longer in Silver, I would imagine that it has a lot to offer - maybe next time!
