Historic Area

Early Ohio was made up of industry. Left are the remains of the charcoal iron furnaces of the Hanging Rock Iron Region. (these are located in the Hocking Hills area) Wayne National Forest. Sandstone was used for the stacks and lining that were found in the mountainside cliffs. There were 46 furnaces. This was one of the leading pig iron producing centers in the world during the civil war for armaments from 1818 to 1916. Today there are 17 furnaces still standing as monuments. We visited the Hope Furnace at Lake Hope.
