How beautiful Olinda! | at the back you can see Recife |
If you are planning to travel to Brazil there is a place you can’t miss out: the magic city of Olinda. This apparently small town is nowadays part of the capital of the northeast state of Pernambuco, Recife and is full of remains of its glorious colonial past. Olinda, now a UNESCO designated world heritage city, was founded in 1537 as the capital of the Portuguese captaincy of Pernambuco. Its economy depended heavily on sugar cane and slave labor. In 1630 the Dutch captured the city abd held it for about 25 years. The town prospered under the governorship of Count John Maurice of Nassau. By the early 1700's Recife (5 miles away) started to overshadow the economic importance of Olinda. |
