  • Every evening at dusk (approx. 7pm in winter and 8pm in summer) at Uxmal, there is a Light and Sound show. This show is held in the Nun's Quadrangle. You can either sit on the steps of the quadrangle or on chairs set up just for that purpose.

If you only attend the Light and Sound show, you will pay 50 pesos, however you do not have to pay if you still have your armband from your entrance fee earleir that day (even if you leave the site for dinner).

If you attend the light and sound show first and are planning on touring the ruins the following day, the 50 pesos are taken off the 88 peso entrance fee for the next day (that is what we did). If you are driving, parking is 10 pesos each time.

In addition, since we do not speak Spanish, we rented an ear-plug device that beams an English translation of the Spanish into our ears. The cost for this in 2005 was 25 pesos each.

  • The Uxmal sound and light show features the various buildings brightly lit -- cued with a story that is broadcast over loudspeakers. There seems to be three stories talking about Mayan history, and in fact one of them supposes that the reason that the Mayans eventually left Uxmal was due to several years in a row of drought.

The lights are pretty cool, and we were told it was a must-see part of the Uxmal experience, but I do not think you miss much if you forgo it.

Archaeology students should be very happy with this information. There are some very specifif details that are not that common to find sometimes.
