From the top of the Great Pyramid (La Gran Piramide), I took this panorama of the site. Uxmal was built between 600 and 1150 A.D., although the site dates back to 500 B.C. The stonework is intricate -- truly exceptional. Uxmal's buildings seem to grow out from the forests and they are surrounded by beautiful and hilly country.
The Mayans had a governing class that served as intermediaries between man and the gods. This governing class monopolized most important activities and channeled the Mayans into the construction of these fabulous buildings.

This is part of the brochure you receive when you visit Uxmal. If you blowup the brochure, you can match the map to some of the buildings in my panorama. (9) is the Great Pyramid from where the above photo is taken. In the photo you can see [left to right] -- (3) the Quadrangle of the Nuns, (10) the Temple of the Turtles, (1) The Magician's Pyramid, and to the far right, (11) The Governor's House.
- Cons:Not accessible from Cancun as would need a 5 hours drive one way
- In a nutshell:Outstanding and less-visited Mayan ruin

Good page. I have a dvd on this interesting area, would love to be able to see it one day.
Awesome Uxmal pages...too bad it is 5 hours from Cancun, but hopefully one of these days, we'll see it...thanks for sharing, jumpingnorman :)
What a fascinating site! Pity it's such a long way from where I live. Thanks for this most interesting virtual tour and your great photos.
Great pages! I'm visiting Uxmal in June so your tips and pictures have helped me with my planning!
Archaeology students should be very happy with this information. There are some very specifif details that are not that common to find sometimes.
wow, it's a lot more restored nowdays & the forest has been cut back a lot :) Will have to go back too at some point! (yes "mooch" is to slowly meander about).
Fantastic pages about Uxmal. The Mayan culture is so interesting, and your fine pages point that out so well. You have wonderful photos to accompany these stellar pages.
A really enjoyable page: fascinating place, well presented in both tips and photos.
Great page on Ruinas Uxmal. Very informative with beautiful photos. Happy birthday from Finland!
Great page lats. I loved Uxmal, much more than Chichen Itza, which as you know, is more of a blend of Mayan and Toltec Architecture.
