"Fortress of Louisbourg!" Top 5 Page for this destination Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Park by Redlats

Visiting the Fortress is a major process. You need to know the following details:

History: Louisbourg was between Quebec and New England, so constantly of interest to both the French and English. By 1744, Louisbourg had been built by the French and was a major town - 3000 inside the walls, 1000 outside.

Entry: The pass is fairly expensive ($13.50 per adult), and to properly tour the Fortress takes all day, so come in the morning.

The rebuilding of Fortress Louisbourg was partially the result of the Canadian government's decision to close down most coal mines in the 1950's and 60's. The region had numerous unemployed ex-miners, and in the 1960's, they were hired to reconstruct Louisbourg. Only about one quarter of the original town was rebuilt. Within the walls there are buildings and streets including yards as they were in 1744.

I asked if they would ever build the rest, and was told not. The current reconstruction is already so large that nobody can see it all in one day, and it cost millions of 1960's dollars -- the price now would be astronomical.

I lived at Louisbourg at one time and attended a banquet at the Fortress. We were told that the soldiers only had the large spoon and not knives and forks.. not a matter of lack of skills, I think. :-)

Lats, a very nice page on Louisbourg with plenty of interesting details! I cannot believe that I still have not had the time to actually make it there myself!
