1000 years of history in Newfoundland

by Redlats - last update: Nov 15, 2004

Arches at the L'Anse Aux Meadows site
We had to drive across of all Newfoundland to reach L'Anse Aux Meadows. It is at the northwest corner of the province - approximately 10-12 hours driving from St. John's at the southeast corner of the province.
Greenland to Vinland is not too far!
It really is amazing that Vikings landed here 1000 years ago, but when you view the map from Greenland's point of view, Vinland was not that far from Greenland.
If you are planning a trip to Newfoundland, see my province page for general help in planning a Newfoundland vacation.

Great info on your visit to the Viking settlement. Too bad that you ran out of time, there is a lot of driving to do in Newfoundland!

I've often wondered if those Vikings realized that they had discovered a new continent, or whether they just thought it was just another place to camp for a while.
