Rheinfels

While driving along the Rhine River, you come across many towns and castles. One of the most historic is the Rheinfels ruins. This castle was first built in 1245, and went through many expansions. By the 1600's, due to the tolls charged for commercial traffic on the Rhine, Reihnfels was one of the strongest fortresses in Germany and one of the most influential Renaissance castles.

It was the only castle to survive the attack of Louis XIV in 1692. However, by the 1790's the castle was not defended against the French revolutionary army, and in 1796 the French blew the castle up.

Rheinfels hotel

There is a hotel built into part of the walls.
