Favorite Thing: buy a reduced price ticket (25 to 50 pct) for one musical of the current evening at TKTS (Times Square - Broadway & 47th St). Ordinarly, very crowed. Open from 3PM to 8PM - Monday to Saturday. Sunday : noon to 8PM.
Fondest Memory: There was an other TKTS in the World Trade Center.

Favorite Thing: breathe the air of Central Park. It is a green island in the middle of the city and the border between Midtown and Harlem. The purposes to be there can be numerous : walk, jogging (remember Dustin Hoffman in Marathon Man), ride a bicycle, do roller blades, eat quietly a hot Bagel sit on a bank, take a breackfast in one of the restaurants, visit the zoo, listen music, and a lot of other things. In spite of the human intervention in the setting up of the Park, the nature is everywhere and it is a greatful site.

Favorite Thing: climb to the top of the Empire State Building at the corner of 5th Av & 34th St. (Station : 33th St) Open from 9:30AM to Midnight. The lift goes to the 80° floor, an other lift brings you to the 86th and a third one is necessary to reach the 102°. An other way is to climb on the frontage as King Kong. The sight seeing is marvellous especially the Sunday in Spring ans Summer (less fog). 15.000 people work here but when it was built, in 1929, there were difficult to find tenants and the first nick name of the tower was The Empty State Building. The photo was made during a visit in 1971. At this date the Empire was the highest building in the world ; the twin towers of the World Trade Center were under construction.

Favorite Thing: Spend some hours at Times Square in the Middle of Manhattan. The buildings are illuminated by neons and huge screens. For this reason, it is better to go there on the evening.

Rockefeller Center: How to keep the contact with France

Favorite Thing: The phone is subject to a surcharge in the hotel. Buy a phone card can be not a cheap solution. And we had never a sufficient number of quarters to call France. So we used the Carte France Telecom. We dial a number for USA (there are several), then a code, then our private phone number in France and finally, the number we want to call. So the cost of the call is on our personal phone bill in France and we do not need to pay any thing in USA. But it is not the good way to call in USA because the cost of the call would be the same if we phone from Paris.
Fondest Memory: The picture wazs taken in the Rockefeller Center, just in front of the Radio City Hall.

VinTolucci Mon Oct 1, 2007 21:52 UTC Shea is a lonely place after September. | Maurizioago Fri Mar 23, 2007 10:22 UTC Nice page. Ciao! | dejavu2gb Mon Nov 21, 2005 16:11 UTC Great page on new york with very useful tips... I will be visiting there next month, very much looking forward to it... thanks for sharing... | AnneAlex Tue Jul 27, 2004 13:22 UTC Isn't it funny how there really isn't an "off the beaten path" in NYC? All of the paths are pretty beaten ;-) It was interesting to read an "outsiders" perspective on our famed city. |
