The oldest republic in the world

According to the legend, San Marino is independent since exactly 1700 years. When the Mount Titano and its fortress (the 3 Penne) appear in front of the car, we understand why. The place cannot be taken by assault.
The Republic of 60 sqKm is governed by 2 captains regents elected by all the Sanmarinesi for 6 months. The votes are easier to count up than in other countries.
There are 40.000 sanmarinesi (13.000 are abroad).
The past of the country involves a military tradition and the Republic is protected by an army of which number is secret but its budget is known (0.7 Million$).
The tourism is an important part of the economy (stamps selling too) and each year, the World parks his car at the bottom of the mountain and climbs by foot or by coach to the town.
San Marino is also a good basis to visit neighbour historical cities : Gubbio, Assisi, Perugia, Sienna, Urbino.
