Initially, Ephesus was a harbour but the deforestation of the surrounding hills justified by the construction of the town has had an effect of channelling. The soil has been transported by the rain into the sea and the harbour has been progressively obstruckted. Now, the sea is at several kilometers from the site. On the photograph : the front of the Celsus Library at the south of the Agora. It was built in 135 AD by Julius Aquila in memory of his father, Celsus, a Roman senator. In the neighbour street, there is one of most ancient advertisment : a stone engraved gives the address of a prostitute who worked near the Library and promised the paradise. |
