The Statue of Liberty of Auguste Bartholdi. One of the numerous copies was erected in 1889 on the Ile aux Cygnes (Swans Island) in front of the Pont de Grenelle. The Statue can be freely seen going to the Island by the stair which is in the middle of the Pont de Grenelle. The face of teh statue is turned toward West that means the USA. Initially, it was turned toward East because the President of the Republic refused to unveil it by boat and wanted to be on the bridge during the ceremony. It is a few known area of Paris. I recommend to go on the Left bank to see a modern district of the Capital. More photographs of the Statue of Liberty on the travelogue 'Passy - La Muette'

It is possible to visit FREELY the Palais de l'Elysée, once a year : during the "Journées du Patrimoine" which take place the 3rd week end (Sat & Sun) of September. An advice : come on Saturday at least 1 hour 30 before the beginning (10AM) because the line is long. You can see the frontage, 11 rooms (including the room of the ministers council) and the garden (from the windows). No guide but a brochure with all the needed comments. You can shoot pictures indoor and outdoor (I had my camera but the batteries were empty - Damn !!!). Time : 20 mn. Message to Jacques CHIRAC : "Jack : your carpets were dirty. Take the example of your US colleague, BUSH : his White House is clean". An info : the visitors did not walk on the carpet and I visited the White House in 2001 (see the travelogue of my Washington page).

A unique spectacle : the accordion player of the Marche Mouffetard during the Sunday morning (and ferial day) from 11AM to 2PM. He is not a simple accordion player and a street singer, he is also a magician who is able to make the croud singing and dancing on old French songs. People distribute the words of the songs in order you can sing with the others. If you wish to see a typical French market with a free performance ... Have a look at the travelogue 'Rue Mouffetard' to see why he is not a street singer like the others and at the travelogue 'Street Singers' to see his colleagues.

The boulevard Malesherbes between Madeleine and place Saint Augustin is very interesting by its shops and its view. On the photograph, Saint Augustin church built in 1860 by the same architect than les Halles. Go to the Church and turn right Bvd Haussmann, there are a lot of store and after 200 meters, the Printemps (department store).

From Mid-July to Mid-August, each Year, the Quays are open to the tourists and to the Parisians. The town supplys freely deck chairs, umbrellars, balls for the "petanque" (a French sport), skating way, bicycles, concerts, books, etc... Diving in the Seine is forbiden and ... dangerous. The right bank of the Seine is devoted to the amusement between Concorde (West) to Mazas (East). 2005 : from 21 July to 20 August. Focused on Brasil (Samba)

The Parc is located along the Seine, on the Left Bank, between the Pont du Garigliano and the Pont Mirabeau, 15e arrondissement (metro : Balard or Blvd Victor). It is completly unknown by tourists mainly because it is new. A modern and pleasant parc in which we go walking from time to time. The children like to play with the fountains. The Balloon Fortis (now Eutelstat) works here.

The Viaduc des Arts has been erected in 1859 for the railway Bastille - Vincennes. When the train was replaced by RER (line A) the line was disused but the viaduct was maintained as a "promenade plantée" (planted walkway). At the ground level, the arcades shelter shops, especially for artists. So, you can walk for 4 Km from Bastille to Porte de St Mandé along a green track on the viaduct and discover unusual views of Paris. The alternative is to go by the sidewalk and look at the shops.
