To many people Tokyo conjures up wild images of hyper-modernity or anime come to life. And if you're looking for the land of misty pagodas, this certainly isn't it. Tokyo is a bustling, crowded metropolis bursting at its edges under the weight of urban sprawl. It's a fairly cosmopolitan city with a few historical sites worth visiting. (Unfortunately, most of them burned down in the War.) For entertainment or food, Tokyo's the best place in Japan. And for shopping, it may be unsurpassed in the world--at least that's all the natives ever seem to do. If you're looking for culture, history, or even beauty, though, keep looking.
