Inspired by a childhood friend of mine, I came to Tunisia envisioning the glories of Carthage and Rome. In these respects, there was indeed much to see. And of course, the country's Islamic roots compounded the cultural pleasures. I must admit, though, that although Tunisia is a delight for those who have never traveled to the Arab or Islamic Worlds, for those with more miles behind them, the country at time seems rather second rate.
