Hotel Kaqchiquel entry
The hotel has a single door entry on the main street and underground parking for only 5 or 6 cars. The management was very hospitible and let us use their computers for picking up email. I would recommend it for a short stay. A short walk to Lake Atitlan with beautiful views of the lake and surrounding volcanoes. The city lake shore is also home to a fleet of water craft which is the only way to some of the villages around the lake.
Unique Qualities: It had a nice small pool with striking murals. Breakfast was included in rate and was good except for the eggs overeasy being slightly overcooked. The lobby contained some metal works of art worth observing. .
Address: On main street of Panajachel
Comparison: less expensive than average
Directions: Near end of street at lake
Price: US$20-40

Hotel villas del Lagos
We arrived late 10 pm, and checked in after getting the clerk up. The city of Flores is an island with some historical value, but it is a fairly run down city. If you must be in the Lake Peten area in the summer,
Unique Qualities: The room was clean with a balcony overlooking Lake Peten. I would recommend the Lagos since it has good airconditioning
Comparison: less expensive than average
Directions: Located on the left street off the street connecting Flores to the mainland
Price: US$40-80

Bungalows at Tikal Inn
We checked in to one of the bungalows in the Tikal Park. It was a nice clean room with fans, no air conditioning The power was scheduled, on at 7:00 and off at 8 am and on 6pm to 10pm, so we relied on the breeze after 10. July at Tikal is pretty warm but after 10 the air had cooled quite a bit and we were out in the park all day visiting the ruins.
Unique Qualities: It had a pool had a dip in the pool to cool off, but pool was warm and not too clean – visibility about 4 feet. But it was wet and the breeze felt good after we got out and laid on chaises at pool. It was within walking distance of the park entrance.
Address: Near the entrance to the ruins
Comparison: less expensive than average
Price: US$40-80

Hotel Aurora
A small hotel 2 blocks from the central plaza of Antigua.
The rooms were comfortable and clean.
The continental breakfast was adequate, either local bread or Bimbo toast, with butter and jam and good Guatemalan coffee or tea.
Coffee and tea could also be requested at other times for a small fee.
I would recommend this hotel because of its safety and location to the center of town.
Unique Qualities: On a clear day the Agua Volcano can be seen over the roof of the courtyard.
The entrance was barred with a iron grill which was opened by the desk electrically unlocking. This prevented the entrance of non guests or persons unknown to the management. If desk did not notice you, there was an electric bell on the intercom or a ships bell you could ring.
Comparison: about average
Directions: It is located about 3 blocks north from the central plaza.
Price: US$40-80
