"NEWARK" Newark by miromi

OK, I admit it, I've only been to Newark to get to the airport, and what I've seen from the bus windows have been nothing but industrial blight. I've said "Newark sucks!" more than a million times, but you know, I finally stepped OUT of the bus and into the neighborhood and it's a really nice place! --if you don't walk in the wrong direction
There's a huge Spanish/Brasilian/Portuguese community there and brick-lined streets and trees--just like Astoria Queens, only with paella. I really liked the vibe of the neighborhood--very family oriented but not boring, very pleasant. It was much nicer than Jersey City.
thumbs up also to the fresh, young Portuguese boys straight out of Europe in their erotic Euroclothing

While staying in Newark, we found the Loop service has been discontinued, although a few signs at the sidewalks still remain. There is now a light rail train commuting between Broad Street Station and Newark Penn Station. Fare $1.35 adult, $0.65 reduced.
If you can't go to Portugal--- go to Newark (NJ)- The city gets a lot of disrespect but that only applies to the corrupt hacks that run it- a great little metropolis
