Rome is a touristy town, but it's one of the few places where the monuments, artwork, bulidings, and landscapes are well worth the hordes of camera snapping foreigners. You get blown away by the grandeur and significance of things so that it doesn't matter that a German tour group is pushing you out of the way at the Forum. Or that the Vatican is full of camera wielding warriors determined to photograph every last nook and cranny.
Yet there is another, quite fresh side to Rome in the suburbs. The guidebooks describe Rome's nightlife as "boring, sleepy" and "nothing compared to Berlin or London". COMPLETELY NOT TRUE. I found the scene there very open minded, very fresh, and exciting in a way that put the jaded Berlin to shame. (I still love Berlin though). If you want to see the real Rome where normal Romans live and work, take some time to go to the suburbs, wander through some neighborhoods and get your hands dirty. |
