experimental 'asian*' cuisine, i was pleasantly surprised by the most creative dishes i've encountered in a long time. the chef mixes indonesian food with chinese and korean and japanese and the result is quite amazing, although each genre seems as different from each other as different could be! beautiful mod interior. Not only that, a real rice queen works there and plays such poppy mod hits as 'the boy from ipanema' *this gets extra points because many vaguely 'asianish' foods in Germany can be frightening experiences

Favorite Dish: lychee duck & lychee wine! mmmmmmmmm chopstick lickin' good

Papaya: affordable thai food in Friedrichshain

  • Restaurant Name: Papaya

a gay thai guy runs this cozy, laid-back restaurant in Friedrichshain. even though it's just off simon dach strasse it isn't too chic and the dishes are reasonably priced and yummy. It"s nice that he's Thai because i would say most Thai restaurants are not Thai in Berlin, but Vietnamese, and although I love Vietnamese food, you get some really scary dishes! (I have had pad thai at other restaurants that was not sweet and had no peanuts! scary)

Favorite Dish: Pad Thai, of course!

Monsieur Vuong: high class vietnamese for a low price

Amazingly there are still good restaurants in Mitte, and this one is especially delicious and high class although the prices rival any fast food chain. There are two main dishes for the day and you're advised to choose either one, although the lines can be long if you show up too late in the evening, which shows how good this place is. You're going to be shoving elbow space with a lot of chic people who infest the place, but the graceful handsome gay waiters are always polite despite being harangued by thick crowds of people nonstop. The ingredients are only of the best quality and it's just enough so as to be classy and filling. While most Vietnamese restaurants in Berlin are frightening experiences, Monsieur Vuongs does it creatively and with a touch of class.

Various squats around the city: Volkskuechen (folk kitchens)

  • Restaurant Name: Various squats around the city

The squats and punk houses of Berlin offer excellent breakfasts and dinners for only 1 Euro. The schedules are always changing and usually they are closed on Mondays. The people here are usually more open minded and friendly than in other restaurants or kitchens in the city, and make some great vegetarian food if you need it!

Favorite Dish: there is always a vegetarian option!

the best kind of Thai restaurants aren't too fancy and have incomprehensible menus and food that's too spicy for you to handle. you always want one that pushes you over the edge with fresh and yummy ingredients but you can never find these in the upper class pan asian restaurants. This one is particularly convenient after an afternoon spent lazing in Görlitzer Park or rocking it up on Wienerstraße. After a hard day's partying, the extra lazy Kreuzberger can devour her delicious Thai soups here while people watching.

the restauraunt freischwimmer and the club der Visionäre (the bar) are right on the water on the canal leading to the spree. the bar is right next to the flea market and has a lot of young, trashy chic and beautiful people sipping beers and lounging in plastic chairs gazing at the water. it's nice to go here in summers of course and sit by the romantic torches after a hard day of shopping and bargaining at the giant fleamarket next door.

One of my favorite Berlin things of all is to ride my bike to Görlitzer Park and hang out at this bar/theater / film house / playground / old school Berlin Freak café. The people who run this run the bar and kitchen only on weekends in the summers. Yes, they do all live in those brightly painted wagons behind the bar. It attracts a more crusty, older Berlin Kreuzberg crowd, which I like, and the sandy ground teleports you to a beautiful tropical beach, only in Berlin.

Favorite Dish: the folk kitchen has varying dishes but they cook some kickass indian euro veggie combinations

Café Bilderbuch: the coziest café for good conversation

i am sure to visit this café in the winter because it's the coziest place i've been to yet in berlin. huge dining rooms with gigantic, comfortable velvet chairs, tables, and great latte macchiatos make this the perfect place to meet people and have nice conversations. the only downside is the out of the way location in Schöneberg.

Julep's New York Bar: a little bit of new york and america in Berlin

sometimes when you're doing the long haul and living in a foreign place for so long you start craving strange, simple things. Like friendly waiters (and I mean genuinely friendly, not superficial) and chicken wings. While I am happy to go without such American institutions as wet t shirt contests and the NFL, I get cravings for the food, and this little restaurant is the place to go. Not for wet t-shirt contests but for all the yummy American food we miss so much! And the ambience is very open and relaxing, which is really nice when you need to get through the long German winter...

Favorite Dish: I only tried the chicken wings but they were awesome.

German Food: bohemian beer garden in Prenzlauer Berg

  • Restaurant Name: Prater Garten

beer gardens are more of a south German thing, not really typical of Berlin or northern Germany. But in the lovely neighborhood of Prenzlauer Berg you can find a really pleasant, artsy beer garden, Prater Garten. It has a theater, a club (Bastard) and an enormous beer garden. There's also an indoor restaurant if you are there in the winter, and I like to take friends who visit there, because you can get some genuine German food (wurst, mashed potato rolls, the works) in generous portions and drink beer too before you head off clubbing. Most of the people who go are also neighborhood twenty and thirtysomethings, so it has a nice youthful air.

Not all skins are racist, lot of antifascist and antiracist skins all around x-berg, prenzl'berg, mitte (all downtowns areas; beware the far eastern areas.)

I have to assume this was written by an American to make such a huge presumption. I am a gay skinheadin Berlin.....not all skinheads are racists and trouble makers. There is an old saying; 'Don't judge a book by its cover'.
