Water puppet show: Water Puppet Show
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Water Puppets show is not to be missed. It's a tradition that has a long history in Vietnam. The show takes place in a pool of water. The puppeteers are behind a bamboo screen and the controls are under water and out of sight. The show is accompanied by music, played by a band off to the side. It's really funny and entertaining to see these puppets splashing about in the water. While you can find it in other parts of Vietnam, I'm told that it's special to Hanoi. Tickets are around $2 dollars per person.

  • A visit to Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum is definitely a must see while visiting Hanoi. Fortunately I was here on May Day to witness thousands of Vietnamese making the pilgrimage to pay their respect to Uncle Ho.

    Army Museum: The Army Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Army Museum is a facinating visit, especially for those interested in the Vietnam War. You'll find all kinds of military weaponry from French occupation on thru the Vietnam War(or American War, depending on your persective).
Visiting the Army Museum gives you an interesting view of the war from a Vietnamese perspective. Right or wrong, it's still a significant reminder that there's always two sides to every story.

  • St. Joseph's Church has to be my favorite in all Hanoi. From the outside it appears very medieval, but the inside is decorated with gorgeous stained glass in traditional Catholic style.

    Out of Hanoi: Halong Bay
  • Tip Rating:
  • Halong Bay is nice 2-3 day trip out of Hanoi. It's around a three hour bus ride to Ha Long Bay, and another 2 hour boat ride to Cat Ba Island. It's one of the World Heritage Sites and well worth seeing. It's hard to take a bad picture.

    Opera House: Hanoi Opera House
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Hanoi Opera House is worth a visit even if you're not into opera. It's a beautiful example of the French Colonial architecture here.

Hoan Kiem Lake: Hoan Kiem Lake
  • Tip Rating:
  • You'll find all sorts of activities along the shores of Hoan Kiem Lake. You'll find people engaged in conversation, napping, spending time with loved ones.... Pull up some shade and people watch!
Hoan Kiem Lake is where everyone, young and old, goes to relax. The trees surrounding the lake are filled with decorative lights, so it's even more beautiful at night.

    Walking arround: The Old Quarter
  • Tip Rating:
  • It's said that the Old Quarter holds the heart and spirit of Vietnam. People are buying and selling in every nook and cranny of the street, and there's a constant flow of bicycles and motos whizzing by.
If you're on a budget, you'll probably want to find a place to stay in the Old Quarter. Rooms range from $3 to $30 dollars. You'll also find plenty of bargain shopping and countless cafes for cheap eats.

    West Lake: West Lake
  • Tip Rating:
  • West Lake isn't as nice as Hoan Kiem Lake, but it's worth a visit. The best way to see it is to rent yourself a bike.
