Bangkok, Thailand's capital. Founded in 1782 by King Rama I and located on the banks of the Chao Phraya River. It is the capital in every sense of the word. It is where the Royal Family resides, it is also the seat of government and administration, and it is the focal point for virtually all major industrial, commercial and financial activities. It is the country's main port and home to one tenth of the Kingdom's population.
Bangkok is the usual gateway for most travellers, and you should plan on three or five days in the capital. This should allow sufficient time for seeing the major sights such as the Grand Palace and Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Wat Arun, Wat Pho and Vimanmek Mansion. Perhaps also a trip along the Chao Phraya River or a shopping jaunt to Chatuchak Weekend Market. |
