We're not the unadventurous tourists riding around in a tinted glassed - airconditioned bus - asking when we're going to the beach and we're not the very adventurous hitch-hiking - packpakking - don't know where we're going - in sandals kind of tourist, so we chose something in between: we rented a car for the first week and drove around. (The countyside is amazingly beautiful, even from the highway.) Then we spent a couple of days at the beach, and the last few days of our vacation, we stayed in Havana, the capital.
It was a perfect combination; it felt like we had three very different vacations all in one!
