Home of the University of Virginia Charlottesville is in central Virginia about 100 miles southwest of Washington, DC. It is located on the upper Piedmont Plateau. The city was established as a town in 1762 and incorporated as a city in 1888. Today it encompasses a land area of 10.2 square miles.

There are five historical gems located here: 1. Monticello (pictured here) 2. University of Virginia 3. Ashlawn-Highland 4. Historic Court Square 5. In Charlottesville, you will find museums, galleries, wineries, shops and parks. My own children, when they were small, enjoyed McIntyre Park. It was a break for them between visits to all of the historic sites in the area. Here is a map of the historic downtown area. |

MichieTavern Mon Dec 29, 2008 21:43 UTC Dear friends: The Wine Museum has been closed at Michie Tavern. However, other exciting historic structures have been reconstructed and new interactive programs have been introduced. "Gaming" is featured on the Tavern tour as a fun, educational tool. | Faiza-Ifrah Tue Jan 29, 2008 02:01 UTC wonderful tips on virginia's big 5 :-) i am building my custom travel guide to visit this part of the state in summer 2008. | matcrazy1 Sun Sep 3, 2006 04:29 UTC Thanks a lot for refreshing my great memories from lovely Charlottesville.
