Lahaina means "Cruel Sun." Front Street is Lahaina"s own boardwalk. Lahain is referred to as the "jewel in the crown of Maui."
Maui is nicknamed "The Valley Island." Its official flower is Ioke Lani (pink cottage rose.)
The island of Maui has an area of 727.3 square miles. But the county of Maui, which includes Molokai, Lanai, and Kahoolawe has an area if 1m 159.3 square miles.
The population of the island is 120,785. It is 31% Caucasian, 12% Japanese, 22% Hawaiian/part Hawaiian, and 15% Filipino. The population of Lahaina is 9,073.
Named for a Hawaiian demi god, Maui is the second largest of the Hawaiian populated islands. It was formed 1.3 million years ago by the volcano Haleakala (House of the Sun). The 10,026 foot high volcano is still active and occupies much of central Maui. The surrounding islands of Molokai, Lani, and Kahoolawe were formed by a group of six volcanos and were once part of Maui. When the sea level rose, the valleys between the land masses flooded.
History
In the early 1800's King Kamehameha made Lahaina his capital. At the time the town was filled with both whalers and missionaries. |
